Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) in surveillance operations

A question posed recently by a member of Linked In's Homeland Security Group:

In respect of operational requirements for UGV's: making a great mule transport platform, UGV payloads up to 500 lbs and ranges up to 320 miles can be achieved today. These vehicles also have great potential for security applications such as camp security and wide area surveillance among others.

Combined with surveillance technologies a single UGV can track several square miles each second and operate autonomously all day long, or night for that matter. A single vehicle operator can monitor several units operating independently in their respective sectors and sending alarms when they detect activities such as unauthorized personnel or vehicles several miles away.

However, in addition to GPS guidance, obstacle avoidance and object recognition what woud be the speed and endurance requirements for these systems to make them feasible for Homeland Security and Law Enforcement missions?
